What is Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery?

The MVHR system extracts stale air from the home and replenishes it with fresh air, without any impact to the temperature of the room. Our smart ventilation systems can ventilate by zone when it is needed, making them quieter and more energy efficient. We provide both Mechanical Extraction Ventilation(MEV) and Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR).

How does MVHR work?

Sensors continuously measure air quality and humidity, when it falls below a preset parameter the central MVHR unit will bring fresh air through the supply ducting into the room. Stale air is removed from kitchens, bathrooms or areas with high activity and fresh air is brought into living spaces and bedrooms. Depending on the system that is selected, zones can be set up so only occupied rooms are switched on further improving efficiency.


Why is it important to measure air quality?

We spend typically 60 – 80% indoors, in modern buildings there are high levels of insulation which can lead to a buildup of pollutants such as Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), moulds, dust mites and other allergens. This can trigger respiratory problems, allergies and other health issues. By well ventilation the room and adding filters to MVHR we can ensure fresh, clean air in our homes with no impact on the temperature of the room.

Good air quality is also linked to better cognitive function and air quality. Poor quality can lead to discomfort, fatigue and a decrease in overall well being. People are more likely to be productive and comfortable in environments with clean air


How loud is MVHR? Will it disturb my sleep?

Sound is a key factor for MVHR, it’s essential your system is well designed, specified and installed. At Surface Renewables we sell Duco system, the quietest MVHR system in Europe that uses a simple ducting system, Duco flex which further improves efficiency of the system. UK building regulations offer guidelines regarding maximum sound levels, recommending a level of 30 dB for noise-sensitive rooms such as living rooms and bedrooms, and 45 dB for other rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms. Our units fall well below that threshold, and our inhouse design team will ensure you have the right set up so that your sleep will not be disturbed.
